SUMMARY:Virginia Indians Yesterday and Today
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the history of the Powhatan confederacy and other Virginia tribes that were not a part of the confederacy. Nellie and Kevin will discuss the trials of Virginia Indians in the early part of the 20th century including Walter Plecker’s attempts to completely erase native culture from our society and will contrast his work to the advocacy of Frank Speck who tried to reunite the tribes of the confederacy. We will hear how attempts to “kill the Indian and save the man” extended into the 50s as Indian boarding schools and the education system were the next phase in racist practices. \nOur speakers will also address the state of Virginia Indians in modern times and react to the question\, “do you live in teepees?” (They don’t). Some Native Americans live on reservations\, but many others do not. We will hear about the process to get federal recognition\, working with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.  Nellie and Kevin will discuss which tribes are currently federally and state recognized as well as the difference between these two things and mention the tribute still paid to the Virginia governor each year. The conversation will continue as we hear about efforts to bring the diaspora back into native communities. \nQuestions will be taken after the presentation.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n If you can’t attend in person please use this link to JOIN VIA ZOOMMeeting ID: 823 4409 1516Passcode: 376359One tap mobile:+16465588656\,\,82344091516#\,\,\,\,*376359# US (New York)+13017158592\,\,82344091516#\,\,\,\,*376359# US (Washington DC) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Our Speakers\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Kevin Brown is a retired Chief of the Pamunkey tribe of King William County\, Virginia. He has worked for “Akwesasne Notes” and traveled with the renowned activist group the White Roots of Peace in the 1970s. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nellie Adkins\, co-chair of the Diocese of Virginia’s Native American Ministry will be giving an educational talk on the topic of Virginia Indians and specifically the Indigenous people on whose ancestral lands Chanco on the James now sits. \n  \nNellie is a Virginia Indian (Chickahominy)\, who holds a B.A. in History/Communications from Old Dominion University and Masters’ degrees in Native American Studies/Education/Journalism from the University of Montana at Missoula. SUMMARY:Women’s Lenten Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Join us April 1st and 2nd for our Annual Women’s Lenten Retreat featuring The Rev. Torrence Harman as we explore the teachings of Fr. Richard Rohr\, a Franciscan friar and ecumenical teacher who bears witness to God’s glory in our time. Come learn about the interweaving of life experience\, the “maturing” of our faith\, and our spiritual formation as we reconnect with our “true selves” and are reminded of the heart-centered longing of the Divine God. Our time together will include\, in Rohr tradition\, both quiet contemplation and reflective action. Can’t wait to see you there!  \nAbout Torrence\nThe Rev. Torrence Harman bring to this retreat three score and ten plus years of life and a special interest in the teachings of Richard Rohr. As a member of the 2018–2020 cohort class of Rohr’s Living School at the Center of Action and Contemplation\, The Rev. Harman continue to learn from Rohr’s evolving teachings. The Rev. Harman is an Episcopal priest\, ordained at age 60\, and has served as adjunct faculty at the community college level teaching World Religion\, Old Testament\, and New Testament courses for seven years. She has served as a spiritual director and retreat leader for over a decade. Prior to her ministry\, she was a family law attorney and Virginia Supreme Court mediator for twenty years. \n\n\n“The roles of child\, parent\, grandparent\, homemaker\, community volunteer\, spouse\, divorcee\, re-married spouse\, widow\, friend\, confidant\, pastor\, penitent have been threaded throughout my life. I have fallen many times: up\, down\, apart\, and up again\, in a continuing cycle along this journey we call “life” — coming ultimately to understand that I am simply a work-in-process\, by the grace of God.”\n— The Rev. Torrence Harman\n\n\nPrice is $150 for the overnight experience\n$40 for Saturday only\n$40 for virtual participation. \nDownload the Women’s Lenten Retreat flyer. \nRegister Now
