DESCRIPTION:2023 Lenten Retreat for Men\, Women\, and Couples\n\nTired of Covid? Weary from watching the news? Need some gentle time for your spirit? Then it’s time to register for this year’s Lenten Retreat\, “Let Love Be the Desert.” Led by Angier Brock\, the retreat will invite us to step away from busy-ness and fatigue to enter a quiet space where scripture\, poetry\, and reflection can nourish us. The retreat will include journaling\, group discussion\, and silence\, with time after lunch for walking Chanco’s labyrinth\, strolling through the woods\, engaging in a quiet indoor reflective activity\, or simply sitting. Those wishing to spend some time outdoors should wear clothes and shoes suitable for that day’s weather.\n  \nAngier Brock\, a veteran retreat leader\, is a communicant of Grace Church\, Yorktown\, where she serves as an EfM mentor and a Centering Prayer facilitator. She has an MA in Christian education and an MFA in creative writing\, and several dozen of her hymn and anthem texts have been set to music by both English and American composers and sung in a variety of churches in the U. S. and abroad. Learn how you can engage with the Matoaka Covenant\, a written pledge that builds on the spiritual and intellectual foundation created by the Episcopal Church with the New Jamestown Covenant in 1997. With the Matoaka Covenant we pledge to work together for racial justice and equality\, expand the dialogue between our peoples and traditions\, and stand together to care for God’s creation. \nSome of the day’s activities include: \n\nChiefs and tribal representatives from Upper Mattaponi and Nottoway Indian Tribes will converse about their customs and cultures\nNative artisan demonstrations\nNative Gardening by Tom Powell\nWhat Is Indigenous Ministry and How Can We Do It Effectively? Presented by Rev. Jim Kee-Rees\nInevitable Uprising 1622 presented by Mark Summers\, Public Historian\, Jamestown Archaeology Team\nMattaponi Tribal Historian Samuel Custalow McGowan will display handmade replica artifacts with an emphasis on being stewards of creation\nHands-on interpretive material about the Pre- and Post-Contact Virginia Indian Economy\, hosted by the Hampton History Museum\nTo Lead and Serve\, exhibit about the Hampton Institute Indian school\nArt installation by renowned artist Chief Kevin Brown\, former chief of the Pamunkey tribe\nBishop Carol Gallagher\, author of The Matoaka Covenant\, will preach at our worship service\n\nThe day’s events are free and open to all.
