As our summer camp comes to a close, we hear many campers saying, “I can’t wait a whole year to come back to Chanco!” Our answer is, “You don’t have to!” The Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia hosts retreats at Chanco throughout the year for young people grades 6-12. These retreats are an opportunity to reunite with camp friends. They are also fantastic programs designed to form disciples of Jesus through worship, fellowship, education, service and wellness. They are also a ton of fun with games, dances, skits and more! Don’t miss a chance for more laughter, singing, worship and friendships in Chanco’s magical woods. Attend a youth event this school year and reunite with friends old and new. Our Diocesan Youth Missioner, Ashley Scruggs, can be contacted for more information on any diocesan youth event and she can be reached at 757-213-3393 or at [email protected].

If you are a parent who hears your child talk about the magic of Chanco and says to yourself, “I wish there was something for adults!”, we have the answer for you too! The Cursillo movement in the Diocese of Southern Virginia hosts three retreats annually at Chanco for adults of all ages. The weekends are four days in length consisting of self-reflection, prayer, large and small group discussion, music, worship, and fellowship. Cursillo is defined as a movement within the Episcopal Church designed to help us grow closer to Jesus Christ. It’s also a community where we’re encouraged to live joyfully and serve faithfully in grace. But it is truly more than that. It is an opportunity to deepen your faith, share it with others, and make new friends from throughout our diocese who share your passion for Christ. If any of this sounds inviting to you, please prayerfully consider attending a Cursillo weekend. The next Cursillo weekend is Cursillo #163 being held September 28-October 1 and is a co-ed weekend. The rector for the weekend is Jim Thurmond of St. George’s, Newport News. For more information on Cursillo or to apply to be a candidate or a team member, please visit the Cursillo website at www.cursillodiosova.org or contact Jim at [email protected].
